Shoot and
Scoot 2006
How's this for an idea?
- Put together one of southern
California's premier motorcycle shops and a first-class photography
store...
- Invite a bunch guys to a day of
photographing vintage aircraft, high performance BMW motorcycles, and
a beautiful young lady...
- Throw in a mix of beautiful weather,
great company, a free barbeque, and a photo contest.
The concept sounded like a winner to us,
too, so my friend Marty and I rode over to the Chino Spectrum to begin a
great day. We were not disappointed. Scroll down and see
what we saw on the first of what I hope will be many more events like
this...

A mascot on a DL1000
Suzuki....
My first shot of the day,
taken while we were talking to several other riders at Les's Photo
Solutions store.
Marty pointed out this
DL1000-mounted Spiderman. He has an eye for details like this.
|
 |
 |
An R1150GS Beemer parked in
front of Les's Canon shop. |
 |
My first shot at the Planes of
Fame museum in Chino. This plane is one of two remaining in the
world. The other is in the Smithsonian. The one is this photo
is actually airworthy. |
| My good friend Dave in front of
a P51 Mustang. We both agree this is one of the finest-looking
airplanes ever made.
Dave was one of the guys on the 2005
Three Flags Rally from Tijuana to Calgary. He actually owns a
couple of Beemers...an R1150GS and an R1150RT.
Dave has
the best-developed sense of humor in the world. Having a
conversation with this guy is always a treat.

Nose art on another vintage
World War II aircraft. |
|
A carrier-based, radial
engine, World War II aircraft. That's why the wings fold up...so
they can stuff more of them below decks on an aircraft carrier.
|
 |
 |
A really cool radial engine on a
biplane. Note the nose nacelle. We put it to good use in the
next photo. |
| Marty and I goofing around with
the Nikon D200 and the 12-24 Tokina, brought to you by the airplane shown
above. I love these self-portraits...here are a few more...

A fitting name for the day's
events...and more visually-arresting nose art.
|
 |
 |
Check out this radial
engine. Don't those pushrod covers remind you of a Harley motor? |
 |
Another colorful airplane...Wee
Willy II.... |
|
These airplanes had a V-12
engine.
|
 |
 |
And another shot of a radial
engine.
Check out the vintage commercial passenger
plane in the background. |
|
Here's the logo on that
aircraft.
|
 |
 |
A tight shot showing an air
intake and the exhaust. |
| An exhaust pseudo macro shot.
Note the oil on the lowest exhaust
pipe.
One of the museum's docents told me that
everyone of the aircraft on display is in flying condition. He also
told me that if a radial engine doesn't leak oil, it's because it doesn't
have any oil.
I've heard that about one or two
motorcycles, too...
|
 |
 |
Awesome nose art...the jaws on
the World War II Curtiss P40 Warhawk. |
|
The nose art just kept on
going.
|
 |
 |
And more... |
 |
Twin .50 calibers on a B-17's
rear turret. The 12-24 Tokina does a great job on these kinds of
shots. |
| A photo inside the B-17.
It was tight walking around in this airplane. It's hard to imagine
what it must have been like for our soldiers in World War II. |
 |
 |
The B-17 cockpit view, looking
out at our bikes in the parking lot. |
| One of the the B-17's ammo
storage drums...over a thousand rounds of .50 caliber machine gun
ammunition. |
 |
 |
The Pasadena Pistol
Packer...aircraft alliteration extraordinaire... |
|
The Planes of Fame museum is
an incredible spot to take photos.
Les and Bob, and John from
Canon, really came up with a great concept when they developed the
"Shoot and Scoot" idea.
|
 |
 |
A simulated crash scene. I
shot this without flash, resting the D200 on a handy table top. |
|
Another radial engine that
looks like it saw some time underwater.

Emblems and patches for sale
in the souvenir shop.

|
A mannequin on a motorcycle
in Bob Brown's BMW showroom.
I shot this without flash
using the Nikon 28mm lens.
|
 |
 |
Canon had several digital
cameras on display at Brown's BMW.
It worked for me.
I bought my daughter a point and shoot
digital that evening when we visited Les's store, Photo Solutions, in the
Chino Spectrum. |
|
A beautifully-repainted R90S
BMW.
|
 |
 |
Our model for the day's photo
shoot at Brown's BMW...on a K1200R. |
| At the end of the day, we all
headed over to Les' shop where he printed two free 8x12 prints for each of
the contestants...one in the aviation category, and one in the motorcycle
category. All of the photos were great, so it must have been a tough
call for the judges. The first place photo winner won a new Canon
digital camera, gift certificates went to second and third place, and Les
gave everyone who attended a $5 gift card (which we promptly used on a
digital camera for my daughter). I also picked up a really slick
carbon fiber helmet at Bob's BMW shop, so Christmas came early at our
house.
This was a great day. Our thanks
again to Brown BMW and Photo
Solutions for sponsoring the event. |
